Over the weekend, The New York Times explored the current wave of cutting-edge comics inspired by rock musicians by showcasing My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way’s The Umbrella Academy from Dark Horse Comics, fueling consumer enthusiasm for the already smoking hot title!

Spotlighted in The New York Times on October 20 in the George Gene Gustines-written article, “Superhero Stylings From Stars of Pop,” The Umbrella Academy was called “a childhood dream come true” for the New Jersey rocker. In the article, Way discusses his comics background (a lifelong fan, he even worked in a comic book shop in high school), the origin of the series and his inspirations, which include Grant Morrison’s critically acclaimed Doom Patrol run from DC Comics/Vertigo, the movies of director Fritz Lang (Metropolis) and Marvel Comics’ Uncanny X-Men. The Times’ Gustines also mentions recent publications starring Avril Lavigne, the band KISS and rapper Percy Carey (MF Grimm), as well as an upcoming adaptation of Neil Young’s Greendale and a limited series written by The Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, as examples of the blossoming synergy between the worlds of music and comics. Illustrated by Eisner Award-nominated artist Gabriel Bá, colored by Eisner Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart and boasting covers by multiple Eisner Award-winning painter James Jean (DC Comics/Vertigo’s Fables), Way’s The Umbrella Academy is a six-part original series about seven adopted siblings with amazing abilities – and equally extraordinary interpersonal problems – who must end their childhood feuds and band together as adults to save the world following the death of the only father they’ve ever known.

Warner’s 300 Debuts at #1 (US) with $70 Million Weekend

Posted on March 13th, 2007 in Comics Movies, Dark Horse News by colin

Warner Bros. Pictures’ theatrical adaptation of Dark Horse Comics’ 300 HC opened at #1 with a $70 million box office take, shattering expectations to enjoy the best-ever March opening in movie history while driving consumer demand for other works from acclaimed creator Frank Miller!

Produced by Warner Bros. in association with Legendary Pictures and Virtual Studios, and directed by Zack Snyder, 300 stars Gerard Butler as King Leonidas, Lena Headey as Queen Gorgo, David Wenham as Dilios and many others. Much like 2005’s hit Sin City, the film combines live action with virtual backgrounds to capture creator and Executive Producer Miller’s distinct artistic vision. Serving as a tentpole for Warner Bros.’ first quarter, the movie debuted simultaneously in regular and IMAX theaters, making it the first feature film released in IMAX this year. Also enjoying the third-highest opening for an R-rated film, the epic movie promises to be one of the biggest cinematic hits of the year!

[First the Straits Times, and now Today! Irks me that they like to compare this movie to the Iraq War. Wassup with that? How does this parallel with the Iraq War? This book was written in 1998. The film was adapted from this book. The Iraq War happened as a result of a series of events from 911. Did Miller foretell these events which led him to write 300? Holy Crap Reviews, Batman! He knew about 911 and told no one? I would like to see these reviewers parallel his next 2 movies, Ronin and Sin City 2 to the Iraq War.]

US Media Builds Buzz for Dark Horse’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer from Joss Whedon

Posted on February 14th, 2007 in Dark Horse News by colin

The eagerly awaited launch of creator Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer (BTVS) #1 is just weeks away, and numerous media outlets are busily reporting on the new series, spiking consumer interest for the new title and other BTVS collections from Dark Horse Comics!

In addition to being one of Dark Horse’s most anxiously awaited recent offerings, Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 has also captivated media attention. One of the first was the January 12 issue of Entertainment Weekly, where the new comic landed at #8 on EW’s top 20 entertainment events of the year, joining pop culture giants like The Simpsons, Harry Potter, Transformers and Spider-Man as a property not to be missed. Features and interviews with Whedon about the upcoming title have appeared, or are scheduled to appear, in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Wired, The New Yorker, Vogue, Publishers Weekly, TV Guide and Southwest Airlines’ Spirit Magazine. Additional coverage on MTV.com, IGN.com and other multimedia venues is expected to help boost enthusiasm for the book.

Presenting the previously unfilmed “Season Eight” of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV program, the new book continues the adventures of Buffy Summers, picking up a year after the seventh season’s explosive conclusion. The initial four-part storyline is written by Whedon and features artwork by Georges Jeanty, setting the stage for future arcs by different creators. Though the television series finale saw Sunnydale being swallowed by the Hellmouth, monsters still exist on Earth, and despite her attempts to lead a normal life, Buffy is drawn once again into the eternal conflict between good and evil. With thousands of nascent Slayers in desperate need of training, Buffy and her friends in the “Scooby Gang” will have their hands full in this new title!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 is scheduled for delivery March 8, and will ship with a regular cover by Jo Chen and a 1-in-4 variant cover by Jeanty & Dave Stewart. Additionally, #2 is slated to ship April 5.

Considered by fans and critics alike to be a modern horror TV classic with a liberal dose of soap opera drama, Buffy is still popular long after its initial run ended. Furthermore, fans looking for a glimpse of things to come can find it in Joss Whedon’s Fray: Future Slayer TP, which chronicles the exploits of the 26th century heir to Buffy’s legacy.
